READ: 1 Kings 15:25-34 (KJV)
25 And Nadab the son of Jeroboam began to reign over Israel in the second year of Asa king of Judah, and reigned over Israel two years.
26 And he did evil in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the way of his father, and in his sin wherewith he made Israel to sin.
27 And Baasha the son of Ahijah, of the house of Issachar, conspired against him; and Baasha smote him at Gibbethon, which belonged to the Philistines; for Nadab and all Israel laid siege to Gibbethon.
28 Even in the third year of Asa king of Judah did Baasha slay him, and reigned in his stead.
29 And it came to pass, when he reigned, that he smote all the house of Jeroboam; he left not to Jeroboam any that breathed, until he had destroyed him, according unto the saying of the Lord, which he spake by his servant Ahijah the Shilonite:
30 Because of the sins of Jeroboam which he sinned, and which he made Israel sin, by his provocation wherewith he provoked the Lord God of Israel to anger.
31 Now the rest of the acts of Nadab, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
32 And there was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel all their days.
33 In the third year of Asa king of Judah began Baasha the son of Ahijah to reign over all Israel in Tirzah, twenty and four years.
34 And he did evil in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the way of Jeroboam, and in his sin wherewith he made Israel to sin.
MESSAGE:
Basha took the throne of Israel by force and reigned for 24 years. Upon his ascension to the throne, he killed every member of Jeroboam’s family. Then, God sent Prophet Jehu to him, who prophesied his downfall for assassinating Jeroboam’s family. He also did evil and walked in the way of his predecessor, Jeroboam, forgetting to serve the God who brought him from obscurity to the palace. Therefore, God pronounced the same judgement He passed on Jeroboam and his generation on him.
From Baasha’s life, you must learn that you should never forget where you are coming from when you become wealthy or attain heights in leadership. Serving in God’s vineyard or in any leadership position is an opportunity and a privilege, not a right, because it is God who enthrones. Are you currently serving in any capacity and feel like you attained that position by your skills or expertise? Please think again, ascribe all glory to God, and ask for the wisdom and strength that you need to lead well.
KEY POINT
Don’t forget that you are who you are by the mercies of God.
BIBLE IN ONE YEAR
Ezekiel 1:1-3:15, Hebrews 3:1-19
HYMN 45: O God Our Help In Ages Past
1 O God, Our Help In Ages Past
Our Hope For Years To Come
Our Shelter From The Stormy Blast
And Our Eternal Home
2 Under The Shadow Of Thy Throne
Thy Saints Have Dwelt Secure
Sufficient Is Thine Arm Alone
And Our Defence Is Sure
3 Before The Hills In Order Stood
Or Earth Received Her Frame
From Everlasting Thou Art God
To Endless Years The Same
4 A Thousand Ages In Thy Sight
Are Like An Evening Gone
Short As The Watch That Ends The Night
Before The Rising Sun
5 Time, Like An Ever-Rolling Stream
Bears All Its Sons Away
They Fly Forgotten, As A Dream
Dies At The Opening Day
6 O God, Our Help In Ages Past
Our Hope For Years To Come
Be Thou Our Guard While Trouble Last
And Our Eternal Home
